John Cage reading blog

I was very skeptical when first hearing the soundscape “433”. I had never heard of such a skilled artist performing such a simple act. When I reflect on music, I like to take into consideration how much skill was involved in creating the performance, and how it makes me feel. When reading the article, it sounded as if there was no skill involved in creating “433”. And much of the audience also was not satisfied with the performance and called it “stupid” and “absolutely ridiculous”.

As I continued to read the article, I started to learn a little more about the importance of this performance. I began to like Cage's work when the article started talking about the massive influence this had on music today. And how it allowed pop culture to create so many genres. His work really impacted me because it was able to show society that anything can be music. This allows for so much creativity in artists and motivates innovation.

This article also made me think about the importance that sound has in everyone's life. For example, many people play sports mostly for the satisfying sound of making a shot in basketball or scoring a goal in soccer, or a putt in golf. But sounds are all around us every day and he was able to highlight the importance of this. Before performing “433”, Cage would incorporate everyday sounds such as cards shuffling or movie projectors spinning. His work was able to teach people that anything can be music, and how we are constantly surrounded by it.
