Although I do not have extensive experience with digital art, I enjoy creating realistic art with an out of this world flair. When first learning about zines, I knew I wanted to display what makes me most happy, but didnt know how to describe the feeling. My plan was to show a day in the life of a skier, but use artistic tools to show the happiness you get while on the mountain.
I started the zine off with very realistic images that resemble what you would actually see in the real world. As the character began to get closer to actually skiing I started adding more out of this world aspects. I began adding bright colorful rainbows and hallucinogenic aspects to help describe the feeling of skiing. I used bright colors as a way of describing dopamine spikes in the brain. By the time he was actually skiing the entire screen was filled with crazy colors and out of this world experiences. For example there were rainbows across the sky, and during his jump, he was transported into space. As he begins to hike back to his cabin some of the colors begin to fade, but he is still very colorful to demonstrate the satisfaction and happiness he possessed all day. By the end of the night all the colors went away and the night was still.
I am very proud of this work because on the base level, it is a zine with detailed images, but the deeper you look into it the more you will learn. It makes the reader question what makes them feel the same way the skier does. It questions why certain symbols universally describe happiness. The imagery implies that drugs are the ultimate and universal symbol for happiness, but that true happiness comes from doing what you love.
